The Maple Leaf has come from the Royal Canadian Mint since 1979 and was one of the first bullion coins made of nearly pure gold. The reverse carries the maple leaf, Canada's emblem, the obverse the portrait of the reigning British monarch. Canada is part of the Commonwealth.
At 999.9 the coin has one of the highest finenesses in the bullion segment. Because no hardening metal is mixed in, the surface is more delicate than on a Krugerrand. So it is best kept in its capsule, which avoids marks along the rim.
The coin carries fine radial lines across its whole surface and a microscopic maple leaf with the year. Both can be verified and make counterfeiting laborious. The face value is 50 Canadian dollars, but it trades at the gold price.
