The Krugerrand appeared in South Africa in 1967 and was the first bullion coin to contain exactly one ounce of fine gold. The obverse shows Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic in the 19th century, the reverse a springbok, the country's national animal.
The gold is alloyed with copper at 916.7 fineness, which is 22 carat. The fine gold still weighs exactly one ounce, so the gross weight comes to 33.93 g. The copper gives the coin a warm reddish tone and makes the surface harder than pure gold.
